What is important to know about the food additive E238?
Calcium formate (other names — sodium salt of formic acid, calcium salt of methane acid, etc.) is a powdery mass that consists of small crystals and has a white color (light yellow or gray shades are allowed). It has a very light smell.
The food additive E238 is completely soluble in both alcohol and ordinary water. At a temperature of +300 ° C, it completely decomposes. When calcium formate interacts with powerful acids, formic acid and calcium salts appear.
The chemical formula of the product is Ca(HCOO)2, density — 2.015 g/cm3, molar mass — 130.12 g/mol. In natural conditions, calcium formic occurs infrequently. Artificially, the substance is obtained using special equipment, and calcium oxide / carbonate, calcium and formic acid act as raw materials. When implementing the production process, the requirements specified in TU 6-09-11-1149-78 are taken into account. Plants for the production of calcium formate operate on the territory of the Russian Federation, China and Sweden.
This product is a kind of antiseptic. Also, its main property is hydrophilicity, i.e. the ability of a substance to absorb, interact with a pure liquid. Due to this, if necessary, E238 can be used as a water removal mechanism.
The food additive E238 belongs to the third hazard group. It is extremely important to strictly observe the dosage of such a substance. In case of overdose, a person may face breathing difficulties, skin rash, allergic reaction. It is important to observe safety measures when working with this product. Hands must be covered with thick rubber gloves, it is necessary to put on a special suit and wear a respirator. If an emergency situation has occurred, you should use a gas mask.
To store such a product, it is better to use a completely sealed package. It is important to avoid direct sunlight. The humidity level should not be exceeded in the warehouse.
