Sea freight cost from China to Russia

Sea freight cost from China to Russia

Since the end of 2020, freight has been on the move and never ceases to amaze. Shipping prices by sea are growing inexorably and are constantly breaking new records. Everything has stalled due to a lack of container norms, as well as the fact that due to coronavirus measures, one port or another is periodically closed. The result is crush, stagnation and supply shortages.

At the end of August 2021, Baltic Dry's freight cost index has already broken through the 11th maximum and continues to grow. At the same time, supply disruptions continue and now the companies benefit from less traffic, but prices are higher and the quarterly profitability is growing exponentially.

Statistical data: On 25.08.2021, Baltic Dry increased by 1.3% to reach 4147 points. The growth of the index has been going on for the 10th session, without a break.

At the same time, the Baltic Dry index is a pivot point that serves as a primary reference point for related companies. And thanks to this index, prices are built for the transportation of sodium metabisulfite, sodium dichloroisocyanurate, copper sulfate and other chemical products by sea.

If we look at it in detail, the indicator consists of three sub-indices. It is they who give the final indicators for calculating dry cargo (vessels can be of different sizes):

1. Capesize - these types of ships, as a rule, transport iron ore, fertilizers, coal products by sea. The total weight of one flight is 150,000 tons;

2. Panamax are ore and grain carriers with a capacity of 65 - 70,000 tons,

3. Supramax are the smallest lifting vessels in the range. But the volumes are still impressive: from 48 - 60,000 tons of products.

The index itself includes 23 more diverse routes for the supply of coal products, fertilizers, ore raw materials, grain crops, food additives, chemical raw materials and other items.

Considering Trading Economics statistics, the situation in September 2021 with the Capesize sub-index is not rosy. In early September, it added 2%, which equates to an 11-year high. Capesize has become equal to 6114 points.

The situation with Panamax is slightly better - this index increased by half a percent. But if you compare with the previous five weeks earlier, there is also an upward growth trend. The indicator is 3809 points.

The third indicator, Supramax, increased by 27 points in early September. This is also a new high of 3303 points.

What does container freight consist of?

If we consider this procedure in stages, then the chain consists of the following criteria:

selection of a container line (from which port to which port the cargo will go);

selection of the desired type of containers and a sketch of the number of containers,

calculation of the total estimate for the implementation of delivery;

applications for a reserve of containers;

after the approval of applications - collection of orders for empty containers;

the penultimate stage - the transfer of seals;

after that, planned preparation is implemented, followed by the loading and delivery of empty containers for the export of cargo.

Sea Freight Price

If we consider the cost of freight for transportation by sea, then it is directly influenced by such factors as:

port of departure;

type of container (these are typical characteristics and size),

tonnage and category of raw materials,

the length of the transportation route;

cost costs or, more simply, fuel surcharge,

state duties and the price for registration in a particular port (it all depends on the country),

additional costs for additional. services.

In this case, the rate of sea freight is of fundamental importance. You need to monitor it twice a month, as it changes every 15 days. And when calculating prices, it needs to be constantly checked and monitored.
